| PTi introduces Real-Time IV Monitoring System 1/21/2011 | |
| Aurora IL - Processing Technologies International, LLC (PTi) - In PET sheet extrusion, the maintenance and preservation of the material IV is a key requirement of the process. Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) is a measure of the molecular weight distribution of PET. The mechanical characteristics of PET are improved at higher molecular weights (higher IV) and reduced at lower molecular weights (lower IV). Should the IV of the extruded PET sheet drop below acceptable thresholds, the end product mechanical properties can be compromised to unacceptable levels. The ability to monitor and track the relative level of the material IV in-process and in real-time is an invaluable process tool. Identifying any deviation in the processing conditions and being able to take corrective action to address those conditions is critical to maintaining consistent and efficient production. The IV monitoring system was developed to compliment the HVTSE (High Vacuum Twin Screw Extrusion) system being offered for ''Dryer-Less'' production of PET sheet. The patented HVTSE system was developed by Luigi Bandera and is offered exclusively in North America by PTi as part of a Strategic Business Alliance between the companies. Bandera has installed more than 80 of these ''dryer-less'' systems world-wide. The unique technology represented in PTi's real-time IV Monitoring System is based on a precise measurement of melt temperature and capillary piping pressures such that the viscosity and subsequent IV can be accurately calculated. These results are benchmarked against the ASTM D4603 Solution Test Method for measuring IV and possess an accuracy of +/- 0.02 dl/g. The extracted test data is continuously fed into PTi's flagship TITAN control system, where it can be displayed, stored and readily accessed. PTi will be installing a 2,500 lb/hr dryer-less twin screw extrusion sheet system as part of the HVTSE technology to demonstrate processing PET and PLA along with other polymers during in the 1st quarter of 2011. This system will include the IV Monitoring System providing customers with a hands-on opportunity to evaluate the system capabilities.
